Do you need a website if you already have Instagram and Google Maps?
You don't strictly need a website if you have Instagram and a Google Maps listing, but you need one if you want a place online that you control. A platform can close a profile. A website on your own .com stays in your name and gives customers one clear page to reach you.
Many small businesses in Dubai run well on Instagram, WhatsApp and a Maps listing for years. The question is not whether those channels work. It is what happens when one of them stops working for you, and whether customers who search for you find enough to get in touch. If cost is what holds you back, our guide to what a website costs in Dubai lists the prices UAE web designers publish, with sources.
What Instagram and Google Maps already do well
Instagram is where many customers first see your work. Photos, reels and stories show what you sell better than a paragraph of text, and direct messages let people ask questions without leaving the app. For a salon, a bakery or a fitness studio, a lively Instagram account is often the main reason people walk in.
A Google Business Profile does a different job. It puts your business on Google Maps and in Google Search when people look for what you offer nearby. Google allows a profile for a business that has a physical location customers can visit, or that travels to customers where they are1. The profile carries your hours, your phone number, your reviews and a link to a website.
WhatsApp often closes the sale. WhatsApp Business is a free app built for small business owners, with a business profile that can list your address, email and website2.
So the three channels cover being seen, being found nearby and being contacted. That is a lot, and it costs little. If your business is new and you are still testing what sells, these channels may be enough for now. The gaps show up later, and they are about control rather than reach.
What you don't control on someone else's platform
Every one of these channels belongs to another company, and its rules decide what happens to your profile.
Instagram can disable accounts that don't follow its Community Standards. If that happens, you see a message when you try to log in, and you may be able to ask for a review of the decision. If an account is deleted, Instagram says there is no way to restore it3. Years of posts, and the followers who knew where to find you, can go with it.
Google can suspend access to Business Profiles that break its guidelines1. Those guidelines also limit what you can put in the profile. Your business name must match your real-world name, without taglines, phone numbers or descriptions added to it. For the website field, Google asks for "a website that represents your individual business location"1.
The platform also decides how your page looks, what it shows next to your posts, and what a visitor sees before reaching your contact details. You can't add a full price list in the format you want, rearrange the page, or keep a customer's attention on your own offer.
None of this means you should leave these platforms. It means each one is a rented space. A website on a domain registered in your name is the one address that stays yours whatever happens to a single account. Before you pay anyone to build one, check who owns the website and the domain you pay for, because that is what makes the address yours.
Instagram, Google Maps and a website compared
The three do overlapping jobs, but they differ on who controls them and what they can show.
| Google Business Profile | Your own website | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Who sets the rules | You and your provider, under your contract | ||
| Your address online | A profile on instagram.com | A listing on Google Maps and Search | Your own .com |
| Best at | Showing your work in photos and video | Being found nearby, reviews, directions | Explaining what you offer, prices, how to reach you |
| Full list of services and prices | Spread across posts and highlights | Limited to the fields Google offers | As complete as you want |
| Contact | Direct messages | Call, directions, website link | Contact buttons: WhatsApp, call, email |
| If the account is closed | Can be disabled for breaking its standards3 | Can be suspended for breaking its guidelines1 | Stays online while the domain and hosting are paid |
The website does not replace the other two. It is where the other two point. Your Instagram bio, your Google profile and your WhatsApp profile can all carry the same link, and every visitor lands on a page that you arranged.
The last row is the important one. A website can also go offline, but the reasons are ones you can see and manage: an unpaid renewal, or a provider you no longer work with. That is why the ownership questions matter as much as the design.
When a website is worth having
A website earns its place when at least one of these is true for your business:
- Customers ask the same questions every day. Prices, opening hours, location, what is included. A page that answers them saves you replies and shows you are organised.
- People search for what you do on Google. Someone who searches for a service near them often wants details before they message. A website gives your Google profile a proper page to link to.
- You want to look established. Your own .com on a business card or a delivery bag tells customers you are a real business with a fixed address online.
- You depend on one account. If most of your enquiries come from a single Instagram profile, a website is your backup address.
- You share prices or a menu. A clear list on one page is easier to read than a series of posts.
A website is less urgent if you are still testing an idea, if every customer comes through personal referrals, or if you have no time to keep the basic details correct. An outdated website with old prices does more harm than none.
What it costs to keep a website running matters as much as what it costs to build. Our guide to renewals, hosting and changes after year one breaks down the running costs, so you can compare total spend rather than the first invoice.
What a small-business website needs, and nothing more
Most small businesses don't need a large website. They need a few things done well:
- Your name and what you do, stated in the first lines, so a visitor knows at once they are in the right place.
- What you offer, with prices if you share them. A short list beats a long story.
- Real photos of your work, your place or your products. The ones already on your Instagram are often the best you have.
- Hours and location, matching your Google profile exactly, so customers don't get two different answers.
- Contact buttons that open the way customers already reach you. A WhatsApp click-to-chat link can open a chat with your number and a message already typed in, without the customer saving your number first4.
- Your own .com, registered in your name.
That is enough for a visitor to decide and get in touch. Online booking, payments and a shop are separate projects with their own costs. Plenty of small businesses never need them, because customers prefer to message or call first.
Keep the website consistent with your other channels. The same name, the same phone number and the same hours everywhere make it easier for customers to trust what they read.
Getting a website without starting from scratch
Building a website usually starts with a brief, a pile of photos and a long list of texts to write. If you already have an Instagram account and a Google Maps listing, most of that material exists.
That is how GetSuperWeb works. We build a private preview of your website from what your business already shows online: your Google Maps listing, your Instagram or a directory page. You look at it, and you decide. Nothing is charged before you choose a plan.
If you go ahead, the website goes live on your own .com, registered in your name, from AED 99 a month with a 3-month minimum, or AED 990 a year. Hosting is included, your website has contact buttons such as WhatsApp and call, and 3 edits a year are included in the plan. The websites we build are in English, and they don't take online bookings or payments: customers contact you directly.
The point is not that every business must buy a website. It is that seeing your own website first makes the decision easier than imagining it from a price list.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my Instagram link as my website on Google Maps?
It depends on how Google reads your link. Google's guidelines ask for a website that represents your business location, and they restrict links that redirect people to other pages, naming pages created on social media sites1. Read the Website and phone section of Google's guidelines before relying on an Instagram link. A page on your own .com avoids the question entirely.
Is a Google Business Profile enough for a small business?
A Google Business Profile is enough to be found nearby, but it limits what you can show. Your hours, reviews and phone number appear in a format Google sets, and Google can suspend profiles that break its guidelines1. A website adds a full list of services, prices and photos on an address you control.
Do I need a website if I only sell through WhatsApp?
No, not to start selling, but a website helps customers decide before they message you. A WhatsApp click-to-chat link on your website can open a chat with your number and a pre-filled message4. Customers arrive knowing what they want, and you answer fewer basic questions about prices, hours and location.
How much does a simple small-business website cost in Dubai?
It depends on who builds it and what is included. Across the UAE web designers' price lists our cost guide counts, the cheapest multi-page package has a median of AED 1,749, as a one-off build5678. Domain, hosting and changes are often extra. GetSuperWeb starts at AED 99 a month (3-month minimum), with hosting and the domain included.
Conclusion
You don't need a website just because other businesses have one. You need one when your customers want more detail than a profile can hold, when people search for you on Google, or when losing one account would cut you off from your customers. Instagram, Google Maps and WhatsApp stay useful either way. The website is the address they all point to, and the only one registered in your name. Keep it small, accurate and easy to contact you from. Before you pay anyone to build it, check who owns the domain and what the running costs are.
